Ovarian Follicles

(a) Primary follicles consist of an egg cell surrounded by a simple squamous epithelium of follicular cells. The secondary follicle has a stratified cuboidal epithelium of follicular cells and has begun to develop pools of follicular fluid that soon merge to form an antrum. (b) A mature (graafian) follicle.
